Focusing on the traveling exhibition Covered in Time and History: The Films of Ana Mendieta, organized by the Katherine E. Nash Gallery, Department of Art
During the tour, travelers will also interact with the originators of the Covered in Time and History exhibition, UMN Nash Gallery Director Howard Oransky and UMN Art Department Chair Lynn Lukkas. This five-night stay in Paris has been specially arranged for University of Minnesota travelers and features visits to contemporary art galleries, access to private collections, unique opportunities to experience Parisian neighborhoods and cuisine, and luxury accommodations at the four-star Westin Paris-Vendôme, located in the heart of Paris’ first arrondissement near the famous rue de Rivoli and Place de la Concorde, with some of the best views of the Tuileries Gardens and the Louvre.
More about the exhibition: The Katherine E. Nash Gallery, operated by the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota has organized the traveling exhibition Covered in Time and History: The Films of Ana Mendieta. The exhibition was curated by Lynn Lukkas, Professor and Chair of the Department of Art, and Howard Oransky, Director of the Nash Gallery. After its premier at the University of Minnesota in 2015, the exhibition traveled to the NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale, Florida (2016), University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (2016), the Bildmuseet, Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden (2017) and the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin, Germany (2018). The last and final presentation will be at the Jeu de Paume, Paris, France, October 16, 2018 - January 27, 2019.
Covered in Time and History: The Films of Ana Mendieta includes 21 films and 27 related photographs by Ana Mendieta and Ana Mendieta: Nature Inside, a documentary short film by Raquel Cecilia Mendieta, the artist’s niece and archivist of the films for the Estate of Ana Mendieta Collection. This is the largest gathering of films by Ana Mendieta ever assembled as a full-scale gallery exhibition. The exhibition, exhibition catalogue and tour are the result of a three-year collaborative effort by the Estate of Ana Mendieta Collection, Galerie Lelong & Co., and the University of Minnesota. The catalogue features new original research on the films including the first complete, published filmography of all the artist’s films, authored by Laura Wertheim Joseph, a graduate of the University of Minnesota Department of Art History.
